National Canadian Film Day

Today, April 17th marks National Canadian Film Day (CanFilmDay), a massive, coast-to-coast-to-coast salute to Canadian cinema! It was launched in 2014 and has brought together thousands of Canadians to celebrate our stories and the incredible achievements of our filmmakers.

We at the Calgary Justice Film Festival have, since our inception, been celebrating Canadian and international cinema in our past festivals and justReel events. The Canadian films screened at these venues have tackled issues pertaining to local and international justice that tell stories and present issues of social and environmental justice.

We have, on several occasions, been fortunate to partner with the National Film Board of Canada to support our festival with Canadian films. We have also built relationships with brilliant Canadian filmmakers, some of whom have participated at our festival-related functions. Partners from across Canada have also offered their suggestions for screening of Canadian films congruent with our festival's scope.

Of note, we are working with our committed board directors and programming committee members to select Canadian and international films to screen at future events. Such events include our annual fall festival, Justice Night at the Okotoks Film Festival, as well as justReel. We also anticipate working in partnership with Springboard Performance at the ContainR in Kensington in September 2024. In all of these functions, we will celebrate Canadian films bearing justice-related stories.

Additionally, having recently developed our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion statement, we pride ourselves on the increased selection of films tackling and celebrating Aboriginal and BIPOC Canada.

Happy National Canadian Film Day (#CanFilmDay)!
